There are weekends in the White Mountains when I have a big hiking goal and want to hike all day, and then there are weekends when I’m perfectly happy puttering in my garden and never leaving the house.
My favorite weekends usually fall somewhere between the two.
A good hike in the morning before my family gets up, maybe a little wander around town in the afternoon and then back to the house with absolutely nothing on the schedule.
Sometimes that looks like sitting in the hot tub under the stars. Sometimes it looks like a fiercely competitive game of ping pong in the basement. And sometimes it looks like curling up on the couch in front of the fire with a good book for the rest of the evening.
That’s my favorite kind of weekend in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. A little adventure, a little exploring and plenty of time to just be.
If I were planning a slow weekend in this corner of New Hampshire, here’s how I’d spend it.
Maturing is realizing a slow hike in the morning and nothing on the schedule by noon is not settling. It’s the whole point.
Friday: Take the Scenic Route
There’s something about driving north into the mountains that makes me feel like the weekend has officially begun.
Our home, Nightfall Over the Peaks, sits near the border of the White Mountain region and New Hampshire’s Great North Woods. We have 5 acres to wander, gardens to putter in and a mountain view that never gets old.
Once you’ve unpacked, take a little time to explore the property or just sit and enjoy the view. I love that there is no rush to get anywhere.
If you’re up for heading back out, I love taking a scenic drive toward Lancaster, sometimes crossing over into Vermont along the way. There are farms, beautiful countryside, and a covered bridge in the area that makes the drive worth taking even without a destination.
For dinner, Copper Pig Brewery in Lancaster is a local favorite serving casual American fare. It’s the kind of place that works perfectly after a day of traveling.
Then it’s back to the house, into a swimsuit, and out to the hot tub.
On a clear night, the stars are incredible up here. We’ve even been able to see the Milky Way.
Saturday: A Hike, a Little Exploring or Maybe Nothing at All
After a good night’s sleep, I’m usually ready to get outside.
One of the things I love about this area is that you don’t have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the mountains. There are options for just about every energy level.
For an easy scenic outing: The Basin
Located in Franconia Notch State Park, The Basin is a beautiful place to stretch your legs and enjoy the water and surrounding forest.
You can keep it short or continue along the trail toward the waterfalls, if you’re looking for a little more time outside.
For a hike with a bigger payoff: Pine Mountain
Pine Mountain is one of my favorite hikes in the area. It’s a great choice when you want more of a traditional mountain hike without committing to one of the bigger White Mountain summits. It’s a relatively short hike, but with enough of a climb that it feels like a real mountain outing.
The views are worth the effort, and it’s a trail I’ve really enjoyed sharing with my family since they were little.
As always, check current trail conditions and choose the hike that makes sense for your group.
Or skip the hike entirely
Not everyone wants to spend Saturday climbing a mountain, and that’s perfectly fine with me.
The Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa right in Whitefield has a spa if you’re looking for a little pampering.
Or head into Lancaster, grab a coffee at The Polish Princess Bakery, and browse New to You Consignments for a little thrift shopping. I love finding unexpected treasures in small-town shops.
Just check business hours before heading out. Some of our favorite North Country spots aren’t open every day.
And if none of that sounds appealing?
Stay at the house.
Take a hot shower, start a board game, challenge someone to ping pong, or settle into a book.
There’s no rule that says you have to spend your entire mountain weekend out doing things.
Sunday: One More Walk and Pancakes for the Road
Sunday mornings are probably my favorite.
I like to linger over coffee with my husband, look out at the mountains, and try to figure out how we could make this our permanent life.
Eventually, though, it’s time to pack up and head home.
If there’s time for one last little adventure, Mud Pond Trail is just down the road. It’s a short, family-friendly walk through a beautiful natural area and a nice way to get outside one more time before returning to real life.
And then there are pancakes.
Polly’s Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill has been a family favorite for years. They’ve been wonderful about accommodating our family’s food allergies since my oldest was little, and we keep going back.
It’s become one of those places that just feels like part of a trip to the mountains.
Check their hours before you go, since they’re not open every day.
The Best Part of a Mountain Weekend
I love a big hiking adventure as much as anyone. There are weekends when I’m up before sunrise with a summit in mind and a full backpack ready to go.
But there are also weekends when a short walk, a good meal, and an afternoon at home are exactly what I need.
Books in the hammock. Campfires with a mountain view. A glass of wine on the deck. A little time with the people I love, without feeling like we have to fill every minute.
That’s the kind of balance I keep coming back to.
And it’s a big part of why I love having a home in the mountains.
A Little More About Nightfall Over the Peaks
If this sounds like your kind of weekend, you can make Nightfall Over the Peaks your home base, too.
It’s our mountain home in northern New Hampshire, and when we’re not there ourselves, we share it with guests looking for a little adventure, a little quiet, or some combination of the two.

I’m so jealous of your foliage! It really popped this year. Where I am in Michigan, we’ve had some whiplash between really cold temps and hotter than normal temps. So, this year many leaves have fallen without changing. I won’t take for granted what I am seeing though. Every fall has something beautiful to offer and teaches us in its own way! Thanks for the enjoyable read!
